An advisor to presidents, governors, corporate leaders, nonprofits and occasionally his wife, John is one of the most respected media relations and crisis communication consultants in the country. John’s writing has appeared in periodicals, newspapers and industry newsletters across the country, and he has been quoted in every major newspaper in the nation. John has also written and directed commercials and co-produced and directed documentaries. Having a keen ability to write for others, he has written and placed numerous op-eds, commentaries and bylined articles for his clients.

A native of Wabasha, Minnesota, John served three terms as the town’s mayor during the 1970s. In 1992, President Clinton appointed him to the board of the Federal Home Loan Bank, on which he served for six years while also serving eight years as a Minneapolis Planning Commissioner. He is perhaps best known for his role as key advisor and spokesperson for Governor Jesse Ventura. John serves on the board of the Hiawatha Learning Academy Charter School and was recently appointed by Governor Mark Dayton to the Commission of Deaf, Blind and Hard of Hearing Minnesotans. He recently completed terms on the boards of the Mixed Blood Theatre and the National Association to Prevent Sexual Abuse of Children.

Currently, John is VP for Marketing at Doran Companies, a Twin City-based commercial development and construction company. A graduate of the University of Minnesota School of Journalism and Mass Communication, he is a Vietnam-era Army veteran and has three children who all live and work in Minneapolis. John spends much of his free time in his garden or in the kitchen cooking.
